SILVIO GRASSO

PIEDMONT / BAROLO / LA MORRA

The Grasso family has been cultivating grapes and crafting wine since 1927. However, it was not until 1980, when Federico Grasso began bottling and releasing his wines to the public, that their reputation as producers of sophisticated and modern Barolos truly took flight. Federico's approach is notable for its avoidance of excessive wood aromas, achieved through the use of large barrels rather than barriques for maturation, and a judicious application of new wood, which comprises less than 30% of the barrels used, even on single-vineyard bottlings.

The estate, originally established by Silvio Grasso, has grown from 4.5 hectares to 14 hectares today, with all vineyards located within the prestigious commune of La Morra, home to notable crus such as Bricco Luciani and Bricco Manzoni.

Federico releases six different Baroli, including a traditionally made wine and single vineyard versions from the Giachini and Plicotti crus, in addition to a seductive barrel-fermented Barbera, a traditional juicy Barbera, a pretty and youthful Dolcetto, and two different versions of Nebbiolo.

They practices natural agriculture, utilizing integrated insect and disease control, sulfur and copper-based products, and only organic fertilizers. Spontaneous cover crops are left between the rows of vines and the soil is occasionally tilled, with a very careful use of SO2 in the wines.

Multidimensional, compelling, prodigious in stature. Silvio Grasso offers an impressive collection of vineyard-designate Barolos. – Wine Advocate
