FAMILLE ISABEL FERRANDO

Rhône / CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

image-_dsc0366-tif_edited.jpg

Isabel Ferrando has been engaged in the cultivation of her vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for 18 years, during which time she has meticulously adapted herself and her vines to the terroir, translating that familiarity into a selection of renowned cuvées, particularly those derived from the terroirs of Saint Prefert, Colombis, and F601. In adherence to the principles of the Burgundian "climats", Isabel Ferrando initially instituted a trinity of cuvées from the Saint Prefert terroirs, namely the "Classique," "Réserve Auguste FAVIER," and "Collection Charles GIRAUD," spanning a period of 2003 to 2019.

However, as the arc of time progresses, so too must the evolution of her winery. Guillemette, Isabel's daughter, has chosen to join the family operation, thus expanding the purview of the endeavor. With this progression comes an opportunity to narrate a fresh chapter in the annals of the wines produced by the "Famille Isabel Ferrando."  18 years have brought the vines to a state of full maturity, and organic and biodynamic cultivation techniques now reveal the true singularity of the propriety's terroirs. The art of conjoining distinct terroirs and grape varietals imparts the legacy of this prestigious designation.

The aging process for the wines has now evolved towards more purity, using large oak barrels (foudres) and amphorae for the red wines, and foudres and glass globes for the whites.

Isabel Ferrando Stella Ducit.jpg

Famille Isabel Ferrando ‘Stella Ducit’

In 2021, the estate introduces for the first time a French wine called Stella Ducit, which means "follow your star." Nestled in a piece of paradise, Stella Ducit offers the grace of young clairette grapes, a bouquet of white flowers. Bright and smooth, Stella Ducit expresses the audacity of those who follow their star (Stella Ducit) without hesitation, allowing themselves the freedom to create a different version of this French wine in the future.

Aimed at new and liberated wine drinkers who are not bound by specific wine regions and designations, Stella Ducit is a wine for everyday pleasure and great freedom! It will find its place on convivial and joyful tables and will announce the greatness of its elder siblings within the "Famille Isabel Ferrando." Its liveliness makes it immediately appealing and allows for bold culinary choices.

Appellation: Vin de France

Terroir: red clay and pebbles

Variety: 100% young clairette grapes (3 years old)

Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.

Aging: 6 months in stainless steel tank

Tasting: The nose evokes hawthorn and acacia flowers. The palate is hearty and bright, with notes of citrus and gentian. A fat veil coats the mid-palate. The finish of Stella Ducit leaves a pleasant note of fennel seeds, making this wine an immediate and Mediterranean pleasure.

Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc.jpg

Famille Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

This is produced on 2 hectares of the Saint Prefert area, with two parcels each bringing their own complexity to this grand wine. Two main grape varieties are blended in this wine: Roussanne for its Provencal sensuality, hawthorn flowers and smoothness, and delicate Clairette for its saltiness and freshness. Now, this grand Cru wine takes over from its elder Saint Prefert. Aged in glass globes and large oak barrels (foudres). The purity of the freshness provided by the glass fermentation, and the saltiness and tension offered by 12 HL oak barrels of 2 wines ensure great aging potential. It inaugurates with the 2020 vintage the first chapter of the new blending story of our sunny vineyards' terroirs, terroir of pebbles, blue clay, gravels, and sands.

Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP

Terroir: Serres area - Saint Prefert sector (Rolled pebbles, gravels, blue clay, sands)

Variety: Clairettes 60% - Roussanne 40%

Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.

Aging: 6 months in foudres of two wines and glass globes.

Tasting notes: This white wine stands out from other Châteauneuf du Pape wines for its freshness and smoothness. From the sunny terroir of the Saint Prefert sector, it restores all the minerality of a granitic soil that has been handled gently and harvested without excess. Very well-balanced, it demonstrates a concern for balance and energy. A juicy and mouth-watering attack, a salty mid-palate, and a long and slightly acidic finish. The nose of acacia and lime-tree flowers opens to a floral palate, with jasmine and wild rose, and fruity notes of pears and yellow peaches.

Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge.jpg

Famille Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge

This cuvée is produced on different sites in the Saint Prefert terroirs, each of which brings its complexity to this great wine. 4 main grape varieties unite in this wine, Grenache for Provençal sensuality, Syrah for a firm and straight texture, Mourvèdre for a length in the mouth and a great aging capacity, Cinsault for evanescence, finesse, the flower and delicacy of garden roses.

This is the culmination of our three historic cuvées Classique, Réserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud, from which we have selected the most beautiful places and grape varieties for a great blended wine of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. With the 2020 vintage, it inaugurates the first chapter in the new story of blending the solar terroirs of our vines, pebble soils, blue clay, gravel and sand.

Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP

Terroir: Quartier des Serres – locality Saint Prefert (Rolled pebbles, gravel, blue clay, sand)

Grapes: 75% Grenache noir, 2% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre and 12% Cinsault

Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.

Ageing: Casks of two wines and amphorae

Tasting: Complex, long, with a suave and fleshy mouth, it is characterized above all by an abundance of black fruits, a sensation of strawberries and figs mixed together, a silky and velvety texture. Its attack is firm, its mid-palate tense, chiseled, and its finish supported by a noble bitterness. This collector's wine will now be the only expression of the estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf du Pape colombis.jpg

Famille Isabel Ferrando Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Colombis"

Blend from the plots: Colombis, Cristia, Rayas, and Les Roues. Colombis is a cuvée from old Grenache vines located on three cool terroirs. Since 2004, Colombis offers an elegant interpretation of its terroir. This cuvée is part of the firmament of wines from the “Isabel Ferrando Family”. It is the free expression of its time, a time when finesse, freshness and energy bear witness to the eternal youth of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Colombis is rare, only 6000 bottles are produced in three formats. A blend of three great terroirs in the north of the appellation, Colombis, Rayas and Les Roues, Colombis is a fine and elegant interpretation of old Grenache grown in a Mediterranean climate.

Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP

Terroir:

- Colombis: Sand and limestone

- Cristia and Rayas: Safres and sands

- Les Roues: Clays and granite rolled pebbles.

Grapes: 100% 80-year-old Grenache.

Tasting: The nose of peony flowers and garden roses is open and invigorating. The attack is fresh, the mid-palate fine and tight, and opens on bitter chocolate. Aromas of cherries and raspberries, dark chocolate, liquorice as well as a note of tobacco characterize this wine. Time is the ally of this great wine whose subtle tannins and aromas of cherry and raspberry herald 2020 as a great year for Grenache.

Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf du Pape F601.jpg

Famille Isabel Ferrando Châteauneuf-du-Pape "F601" 2020

From an arid plot in the south of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, F601 is typical of its terroir: rolled pebbles, blue clay, quartz then fine sand. Planted in 1928 on a unique soil, ultimate degradation of the rock, the old vines of pure Cinsaults give all their fragility to this evanescent and singular wine.

Each year, the old Cinsaults from the F601 plot surprise a little more with the delicacy of their mouthfeel, the incredible freshness of the juices and the tender aromas of garden flowers and dried roses.

A very personal interpretation of its terroir, F601 translates through elegance and tenderness the genius of a great appellation. Confidential cuvée (800 bottles per year).

Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP

Terroir: cadastral parcel F601 - terroir of Saint Prefert: rolled pebbles, gravel, blue clay, quartz sand

Grapes: 100% Old Cinsaults from 1928.

Fermentation: whole harvest fermented in concrete vats. Indigenous yeasts.

Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.

Ageing: 18 months in Demi-muids of 3 to 5 wines.

Tasting: 2020 is proving to be a great vintage for the Cinsaults, of rare quality. They give here all the measure of their delicacy. The nose is fresh and floral. The discreet attack leads to an energetic palate of pomegranate and raspberry, liquorice and black cherries. The tannins are silky, delicate. The bitter and long finish evokes violets and dried flowers. This exceptional cuvée crowns the work of the "Isabel Ferrando Family" on its terroirs.
