DOMAINE JEAN DAVID
CôTES-DU-Rhône/ Séguret
Since the mid-1980s, Jean David has been the custodian of his family's prestigious Séguret vineyards, located in the esteemed Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation. Following in the footsteps of his father, who upheld a strict organic approach, Jean immediately began the process of converting the vineyards to organic certification, which was achieved by 1987, and made it the first estate to receive the organic certification in the Rhone region.
Today, Jean and his wife Martine have taken a more advisory role, leaving the management of the 17-hectare estate to their extremely talented son-in-law, Jean-Luc Auffret.
The vineyards are meticulously tended by hand, in harmony with the natural cycles of the seasons. The family promotes biodiversity by fostering the growth of indigenous plants and interspersing additional species among the vine rows. The property comprises several old vine parcels throughout the village of Séguret, some of which are classified as Côtes-du-Rhône and others as Côtes-du-Rhône Villages. The soil composition varies by parcel, with clay-limestone as the prevalent soil type.
This holistic approach extends to the winery where traditional grape varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, and Mourvèdre are fermented with indigenous yeast. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel or concrete vats, and the wines are bottled unfiltered and with minimal SO2 added. The result is a range of wines that are vibrant, expressive, and exhibit a true concentration of fruit. These are traditional Côtes-du-Rhône wines with a modern twist.
Based in Séguret for thirty years, Jean David comes from a long line of farmers. He has been working according to the principles of organic agriculture since 1985. The estate is constantly researching and creating new blends, always favoring roundness over power. Some of his blends, such as the Le Beau Nez red, are fermented and aged without sulfur but are corrected at bottling. A lover of old Grenache vines, he delivers the magic of this great grape variety of the south in his silky and always intensely perfumed wines. He also produces wonderful white wines. The entire production is highly recommended. – La Revue du Vin de France.
