CLOS DU CALVAIRE
Rhône / CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
Clos du Calvaire, established in 1923, has been passed down to new generations. The proprietorship, helmed by Françoise Roumieux, born Mayard, alongside her children, Nicolas and Coline, has been instrumental in illuminating the prestige of the Clos du Calvaire and the terroirs of Châteauneuf du Pape through their vinicultural endeavors. The perpetuation of knowledge and know-how is a constant undertaking, and their philosophy is unequivocally centered on the veneration of life and the conservation of the ecosystem that sustains their vines. The vineyard is entirely cultivated through organic farming methods, with the incorporation of principles of agroecology, to yield wines that are an unmitigated reflection of the terroirs and grape varieties of the region.
The property comprises of 24 plots, spanning 33 hectares, replete with a diversity of soils and grape varieties. Each wine is a product of distinct terroirs and reflects the rigorous and passionate labor of the entire team, from the cultivation of the vines to the winemaking process and the harvest. The approach to viticulture prioritizes biodiversity and the quality of the terroirs. Consequently, they are constantly making efforts to restructure the soil in their plots through the incorporation of cover crops, which not only capture solar energy to regulate soil temperature and moisture but also augment the soil with organic matter once they decompose. Additionally, they continually plant and maintain hedgerows around their plots, serving as a haven for biodiversity that is beneficial for the ecosystem of the vineyard.
