CHAMPAGNE HÉLÈNE BEAUGRAND

CHAMPAGNE/ CôTE Des Bar – Montgueux

Champagne A. Margaine Cuvee M.jpg

Montgueux, nestled in the Cote des Bars, stands out for its distinctive attributes: the remarkable chalk soil and silex that define its terrain, along with its southeast-facing slopes dedicated primarily to the Chardonnay. Oenologist Daniel Thibault from Charles Heidsieck has described Montgueux as "the Montrachet of the Champagne country" due to these characteristics. The soil, from the Cretaceous period, allows for perfect ripening with the right amount of moisture. Notably, a significant share—over 50%—of Montgueux's harvest finds its way to renowned Champagne houses like Henriot, Louis Roederer, Veuve Clicquot, Charles, and Piper Heidsieck. Helene’s vineyards are kept healthy by a grass cover between the rows. Hélène's careful winemaking techniques and the age of the vineyards result in the production of generous, complex, and highly subtle wines. The vineyards are all 45 years old and allow for malolactic fermentation.  Adhering to an eco-conscious ethos, herbicides are avoided, and only environmentally friendly pesticides are employed on rare occasions. Helene's unwavering commitment to quality shines through in her confidential annual output of 25,000 bottles, as she remains steadfastly dedicated to crafting wines that authentically express their terroir.

Vines were first cultivated on the Montgueux hill in the 12th century, but almost disappeared at the end of the 1800s due to phylloxera. After the First World War, the Beaugrand family was the first to replant the hillsides and Montgueux was granted Champagne AOC status in 1927. The main street in Montgueux is named after Leon Beaugrand in honor of the family's role in achieving AOC status.

Helene Beaugrand « La Belle Hélène » by Hélène de Troyes 2015.jpg

Hélène Beaugrand « La Belle Hélène » by Hélène de Troyes 2015

"I had a big crush on these Pinot Meunier grapes that are traditionally used in the production of our red wines, intended for blending in our rosé wines. This time, I chose to have them carefully harvested and isolated to make a separate press." – Hélène Beaugrand.

Terroir: Montgueux

Vineyard: From a tiny plot with just a few rows, behind the lieu-dit called ‘La Cabane’.

Exposure: Sunny, well-exposed south/southeast.

Soil: Chalky (Turonian) – 90 million years

Blend: 100% Pinot Meunier

Malolactic fermentation: Yes, with organic yeast.

Aging on racks: 4 years minimum

Dosage: Brut & Extra-Brut

Notes: A rarity: a pure Pinot Meunier produced in only 2000 bottles, of which the Montgueux Hill only has a few acres. The nose is superb, with delicate and evanescent notes of fresh fruits and faded flowers. It is delicate and discreet on the palate. The liveliness of the bubbles surprises at first, but then gives way to a full, powerful, and rich volume.
