ANTONELLI SAN MARCO

UMBRIA / MONTEFALCO

02_antonelli-villa_banner.jpg

Antonelli San Marco is a historical winery in the Montefalco DOCG region, dating back to the 13th century. Known for their commitment to quality and sustainable viticultural practices, the estate also cultivates organic olive oil, garbanzo beans, farro, and field beans, making it a true agro-ecological haven. The winery is renowned for producing some of the finest Sagrantino wines, an indigenous grape celebrated for its bold tannins and high concentration of polyphenols. The 190-hectare, family-owned estate has been transitioned to organic farming methods since 2009, with 50 hectares under vines.

The vineyards, located on hills of clay and limestone-rich soil, boast a diverse geological composition which imparts a unique complexity and terroir-driven nuances to the wines. The terrain is pristine, surrounded by lush woods and blessed with an ideal microclimate for the cultivation of vines and olive trees. The winery is located at the heart of the property and is designed for gravity vinification, ensuring that the grapes are handled with care and precision. Only grapes grown in-house using organic agricultural techniques are used, guaranteeing a product of impeccable quality and integrity.

With a special focus on autochthonous grape varietals, particularly Sagrantino, which is exclusive to Montefalco, the winery is always looking to understand more about the grape and its nuances by studying the results of different vintages and vineyards with different sun exposures and soil structures. They also apply this approach to Trebbiano Spoletino, a white grape varietal that was almost extinct but recently rediscovered. They use different vinification techniques such as long maceration on the skin in ceramic amphoras for "Anteprima Tonda" and spontaneous fermentation in wood with "Trebium" to showcase its versatility and aging potential.

Antonelli-san-marco-Anteprima-tonda-trebbiano.jpg

Antonelli San Marco 'Anteprima Tonda'

Trebbiano Spoletino is an ancient grape varietal that used to be really common in the area between Montefalco, Spoleto and Trevi. In recent years its full potential has been rediscovered, showing versatility in relation to different vinification techniques. For this wine we chose to use clay and ceramic amphoras, spontaneous fermentation with no temperature control and a long maceration on skins, trying to make our Anteprima Tonda a wine expressing this terroir in a natural and organic way, and showing an unknown attitude of this production area for ageable white wines.

Appellation: Trebbiano Spoletino DOC

Grape varietal: 100% Trebbiano Spoletino, from massale selection of the best old Trebbiano Spoletino vines, grown according to the vine training system between maple trees.

Vineyard: Situated on a hill at an altitude of 350 m a.s.l.; western exposure; Guyot training system.

First vintage: 2013

Harvest: Generally in the second half of October; the grapes are hand-picked.

Vinification: Spontaneous fermentation without temperature control, with a long maceration in ceramic vats.

Ageing: After skin racking it remains in amphoras for some months.

Notes: Very mature complexity arises in the dense and compact structure made of orange shades reminiscent of cedar, orange peel, mandarin juice, acacia honey and nutmeg. Full body, solid layered structure and a relaxed and pleasant finish in the round closure.
